20 Geeky Halloween Costumes for Families
Last Updated on September 28, 2023 by Jenn | The Nerd Mom
If you’re a nerdy mom, there’s a good chance you also love Halloween.
It’s the one day of the year it’s acceptable to dress like your favorite characters from the movies, TV shows, video games, or books you geek out over (unless you are a cosplayer of course, in which case you dress up all the time!).
Hopefully, you’ve passed on the geeky gene to your kiddos; then the whole family can dress up together! Whether you like to DIY your own family Halloween costumes or just buy ready-made ones online, Halloween is a time to let your nerd flag fly.
These geeky Halloween costumes for families will give you some ideas for nerding out with your kids this Halloween.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy
How cute would a Baby Groot costume be for the baby in the family? Guardians of the Galaxy can easily work for the whole family with Dad as Starlord, Mom as Gamora, and another child as Rocket.
2. Star Wars
If you’re a Star Wars fan, there are a lot of Halloween costume options. Whether you’re a hardcore original trilogy fan or a newer fan of the most recent trilogy, you can dress like your favorite characters. Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Rey, and Kylo Ren are some of the most popular choices. Storm Troopers, Ewoks, droids, and porgs also make fun geeky Halloween costumes for families.
Costumes from The Mandalorian would also make an awesome Star Wars theme for families. Ramona from the Fab Everyday blog and her family really rocked these DIY Mandalorian costumes.
You could also pay homage to the new Ahsoka series. How about Ahsoka, Sabine, Huyang, Hera, and Ezra for your family?
3. Avengers
The Avengers offers a lot of possibilities for Halloween costumes. Our family did Avengers last year, with my husband as Thor, me as Black Widow, my son as Iron Man, and my daughter as Captain Marvel. This family included a Dr. Strange, Black Panther, and an adorable little Spider-Man.
For a cute Avengers theme in a family with an expecting mom, why not do out-of-shape Thor like this family!

4. DC Comics
Maybe DC is more your style. I love this family’s combination of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Robin.
5. Lord of the Rings
Lord of the Rings fans have a lot of Halloween options too, but a whole family of hobbits would be something unique. Any combination would be super cool, though. I love the inclusion of the Witch King in this family!
6. Mario
Here’s one for the gamers! If you are a Nintendo family, Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Link and Zelda are all fun Halloween options!
7. Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most popular RPGs right now, and with good reason. The game is phenomenal. Be on-trend with your Halloween costumes this year and go as companions from the game. Astarion, Karlach, Shadowheart, or your own original player character make great family Halloween costumes.
8. Pokémon
Kiddos make adorable Pokémon. Gotta catch ’em all! Heather from Our Happy Healthy Homestead and her family really nailed their Pokemon costumes!
9. The Little Mermaid
Disney nerds might like the cast of The Little Mermaid for family costumes.
10. Firefly
I couldn’t find any photos of families dressed as the Firefly cast that I could use for this post, but I know this show has a decent-sized fandom so I wanted to include it! The costumes would be pretty easy to DIY – I would think you could find many of these items in local thrift stores.
11. The Incredibles
The Incredibles are a family of superheroes, making them an easy choice for a family costume idea, especially a family of two or more kids.
12. Harry Potter
If you’re a family of Potterheads, represent your favorite Hogwarts house like this family.
13. Hamilton
Any history nerds here? Dressing up as important figures from the American revolution is a nerdy costume that is unique. You could choose any formal colonial costumes to become a figure from the revolution, or specifically aim to look like a Hamilton cast member.
14. Roman/Greek Myths
Another great history themed costume for families would be figures from Roman or Greek mythology. The possibilities are endless, from gods and goddesses to famous historical figures.
15. Astronauts/Aliens
A family of science geeks would be perfect for space-themed costumes. Aliens, astronauts, and rocket-ships!
16. The Labyrinth
The Labyrinth was a 1986 fantasy film starring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie that has since gathered quite a cult following. Sarah, Jareth, and Toby would make fun costumes for a couple with a baby! You could buy pre-made costumes, but this one would also be pretty easy to DIY.
17. Game of Thrones
You may or may not have liked the ending, but there were a lot of excellent and memorable characters from Game of Thrones that would make great costumes. You’ve got lots of options, but Daenerys, Jon Snow, and baby dragons would be cute for a family.
18. Overwatch
This cosplaying mother-daughter duo went ALL OUT for these Overwatch costumes. Such amazing talent!
